Oyster Restoration & Sustainability Projects

At CBEC, we are passionate about restoring and preserving one of the Bay’s most vital species, the oyster. Through our restoration projects, community engagement and educational programs, we are working locally to revitalize oyster populations in Eastern Bay, which helps improve the overall health of the Chesapeake Bay.

Our 287-acre oyster sanctuary is unique to the region, and we proudly cultivate the exclusive Pearly Girl oyster—sustainably grown on our 2.8-acre lease in collaboration with Harris Seafood Company and local Queen Anne’s County watermen. This collaboration supports sustainable aquaculture while bringing a unique and high-quality product to local markets while helping us restore the Bay and share its incredible bounty with our community.

To date, we have planted over 14 million oyster spat in our restoration reefs, significantly contributing to cleaner water, healthier habitats, and a more vibrant ecosystem.

Partnering for Change: Oyster Recovery Partnership & Eastern Bay Oyster Coalition

CBEC works in collaboration with the Oyster Recovery Partnership (ORP), the leading nonprofit dedicated to restoring oysters throughout the Bay. Our partnership focuses on education, hands-on restoration and research to ensure a sustainable future for the Bay’s oysters.

We are also a proud member of the Eastern Bay Oyster Coalition, a collective of stakeholders committed to supporting the recovery of Eastern Bay’s oyster populations. In 2024, the Coalition presented a comprehensive set of oyster management recommendations to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (MD DNR), with the aim of influencing policies that promote long-term oyster health.

Why Oysters Matter

Oysters: The Bay’s Natural Filtration System

Oysters are more than just a culinary delight—they are a cornerstone of the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem. Here’s why they are vital:

  • Water Filtration: Oysters filter up to 50 gallons of water per day, removing excess nutrients and sediment. This process helps improve water clarity and oxygen levels, benefiting other marine life.
  • Habitat for Marine Life: Oyster reefs create vital habitats for a wide range of species, from benthic fish like Blennies, Goby to worms, anemone that serve as food for larger fish species and crabs to other shellfish. By rebuilding these reefs, we enhance biodiversity in the Bay.
  • Coastal Protection: Oyster reefs play a critical role in stabilizing shorelines and reducing erosion. Their structures act as natural barriers, protecting coastal communities from storms and rising sea levels.
  • Economic and Cultural Value: Healthy oyster populations support local economies, particularly commercial and recreational fisheries, while preserving the cultural heritage of the region.
  • Sustainable Aquaculture: By growing our own Pearly Girl oysters, we not only aid the Bay’s restoration but also promote sustainable aquaculture practices, supporting local watermen and providing a unique product to the community.

Educational Resources

Learn About Oyster Restoration and Conservation

Education is essential for the long-term success of oyster restoration. Through our educational programs, we offer resources to help the public understand the importance of oysters and how they contribute to the Bay’s recovery.

  • Oyster Restoration Workshops: Participate in hands-on workshops to learn about oyster restoration and take part in activities that support the project.
  • School Programs: Students learn how they can make a difference in oyster restoration, as well as the role of oysters in the Chesapeake Bay and Eastern Shore Watermen culture, through our “Remarkable Oyster” program.
